Methotrexate tablets

Tags: Safety

What is this measure?

Percentage of methotrexate tablets which are 10mg

How is it calculated?

We divide the number of methotrexate 10mg tablets by the total number of methotrexate tablets and then multiply that by 100 to obtain the % each month.

Why does it matter?

Overdose of methotrexate for non-cancer treatment was described as an NHS Never Event in 2018. To reduce the risk of harm, the British National Formulary (BNF) states that methotrexate should, usually, only be prescribed and dispensed as a single strength of tablet, usually 2.5 mg, to reduce the risk of harm from errors.

Which NHS Trusts are included?

Trusts are only included in this measure if they have issued any products included in the denominator for this measure.

For this measure, 218/225 Trusts are included. A full list of Trusts included is available on the Submission History page.
